Stay in compliance with complicated new e-filing rules to avoid huge IRS tax penalties.

The 1099 process for 2022 reporting will be more complicated than ever

Uncertainty is the watchword for filing Forms 1099-NEC next year. The IRS is still finalizing changes to the e-filing rules, under which the mandatory e-filing threshold will drop to 100 or more information returns, from 250 returns. And you’ll be required to add up all your 1099s, W-2s and 1095s to see if you meet the 100-return threshold. The IRS missed this target last year, but it’s a safe bet it won’t make the same mistake twice. That means you and every department in your company that files information returns will have to jump through new hoops. Penalties have more than doubled for returns filed in the wrong medium or for filing incorrect returns.

Even more uncertainty awaits IRIS—the IRS’ new, simplified e-filing platform. The IRS says IRIS will be just like W-2 Online, but who can use it is not yet determined (maybe not mandatory e-filers), as no official announcement has been made. W-2 Online is easier, but it’s not seamless.

The best defense for your payroll department is to learn about all these changes now through our timely webinar, led by payroll expert Alice Gilman, Esq., editor of Payroll Legal Alert
